Gothic m
usic (sometimes calledGoth Metal or simply, Goth is a genre of Heavy Metal music that originated during the mid 1990s in Europe as an outgrowth of Doom-Death, a fusion genre of Doom Metal and Death Metal.

The
definition ofGothic Metal is commonly debated amongst fans and the media; older fans and musicians have a firm concept of the genre and its characteristics, having been around for its conception, and having strict ideas of what bands pertain to the genre.

Newer
fans reject this categorization as limiting, useless, or wrong, often claiming bands are Gothic Metal that do not meet the criteria of the older fans!

Gothi
c Metal makes heavy use of atmospheres in its music, which are commonly tailored to fit the song; warm and energetic, empty and enclosing.

Nightwish

Nightwish
Nightwish are a Finnish symphonic metal band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee. Nightwish is considered responsible for the foundation of the symphonic power metal genre and the subsequent rise in popularity of symphonic metal.
Although the band has
been prominent in their home country since the release of their first single, "The Carpenter" (1997), they did not achieve worldwide fame until the release of the albums Oceanborn and Wishmaster, which were released in 1998 and 2000 respectively. Their 2004 album, Once, led to Nightwish video clips being shown on MTV in the United States and inclusion of their music in U.S. movie soundtracks. Their biggest U.S. hit single, "Wish I Had an Angel"(2004), made it onto two U.S. film soundtracks as a means to promote their North American tour. The band produced three more singles and two music videos for the album, as well as "Sleeping Sun", from the 2005 "best of" compilation album, Highest Hopes, prior to vocalist Tarja Turunen's dismissal.

The e
xtensive search for Turunen's replacement, during the course of which anyone could have been considered by submitting a demo, ended in early 2007. Anette Olzon was revealed to be the new singer on May 24.[1] Recently, the band declared the upcoming release of a new single called "Eva" on May 25, 2007[2]. On September 26, 2007, the album on which "Eva" will be featured will be released.

NOTE: Nightwish has a new singer in the person of Anette Olzon the splendid singer of group AOR (Oriented Adult Rock), for more infos about Olzon, click here.

Cradle Of Filth

Cradle Of Filth
Cradle of Filth is a heavy metal band formed in Suffolk, England in 1991. It has been embraced and disowned with equal fervour by various metal communities, and its particular subgenre has provoked a great deal of discussion (see below). The band's sound evolved from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic black metal and other extreme metal styles, while its lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The band has successfully broken free of its original niche by courting mainstream publicity (often to the chagrin of its early fanbase), and this increased accessibility has brought coverage by the likes of Kerrang! and MTV, frequent main stage appearances at major festivals such as Ozzfest and Download, and in turn a more "commercial" image. It is sometimes perceived as satanic by casual observers, although its outright lyrical references to satanism are few and far between, and its use of satanic imagery has arguably always had more to do with the shock value than any seriously-held beliefs. According to Metal Hammer magazine, it is the most successful British metal band since Iron Maiden. [1] In March 2003 "Babalon A.D. (So Glad for the Madness)" was the first DVD-only single to reach the U.K. top 40, according to the Guiness book of records of British Hit singles and Albums.

Epica

Epica
In early 2002, Mark Jansen left After Forever due to creative differences and began looking for musicians to integrate a new musical project, initially named Sahara Dust. In late 2002, the band courted Helena Michaelsen (from Trail of Tears) as its frontwoman, but shortly after she was replaced by the then unknown mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, Jansen's girlfriend at the time. The band's line-up was completed by guitarist Ad Sluijter, drummer Jeroen Simons, bassist Yves Huts and keyboard player Coen Janssen. Their name was changed to Epica, inspired by Kamelot's album Epica.

Their second release, entit
led Consign to Oblivion, was influenced by the culture of the Maya civilization, a fact which can be noticed, for example, on songs which integrate the "A New Age Dawns" arch. "A New Age Dawns" refers to the time system of the Mayan people, which extends up to the year of 2012, and makes no reference of what may happen past said year. Consign to Oblivion was composed with film scores as a basis, with Hans Zimmer and Danny Elfman being cited as major inspirations. The album features guest singing by Roy Khan (from Kamelot) on the song "Trois Vierges". Epica also joined Kamelot as a support band on parts of their tour for promotion of the The Black Halo album, to which Simone had contributed her vocals.
In 2005 and 2006
Epica went on their first tour throughout North America with Kamelot. After the tour, their drummer, Jeroen Simons, left the band, due to his wish to pursue his other musical interests. In December Ariën Van Weesenbeek was announced at the official website of the band to be the drummer for their new album.

In September of 2007,
Epica will for the first time be the head liners of their next North America tour. It will also see the release of their latest commercial album, which they began recording in late 2006.

Lacuna Coil

Lacuna Coil
With the debut of their self-titled 1998 EP, Lacuna Coil (which translates to "empty spiral" in English) turned a lot of heads in Italy's ambient/goth scene thanks in part to Cristina Scabbia's haunting but mesmerizing vocals. Additional recognition came after a European tour with Moonspell and later with the Gathering and Seigmen. With the rest of Lacuna Coil's lineup in place -- courtesy of Andrea Ferro (vocals), Cristiano Migliore (guitars), Marco Coti Zelati (bass), and Christiano Mozzati (drums) -- the band's first full-length, In a Reverie, was issued in 1999. The Halflife EP appeared in 2000, and their next LP, Unleashed Memories, followed in spring 2001.

The g
roup's third album, Comalies, was highly praised by the metal world after its release in October 2002, and attention surrounding Lacuna Coil continued to grow as they spent time on the road with Type O Negative, P.O.D., Opeth, and Danzig, among others. "Heaven's a Lie" was also a U.S. commercial radio success as the album's first single, followed by the equally popular "Swamped." The band accepted an invitation to appear at 2004's Ozzfest, and spent the next year playing at many European festivals. Karmacode surfaced in April 2006.
